A Day at Subisu: Learning, Exploring, and Getting Inspired

27 March 2025, 11:37 am

Uma KC | Hey everyone! I’m Uma KC, a second-year student at The Westminster College, diving deep into the fascinating world of BSc (Hons) Cyber Security and Forensics. I’m thrilled to share my experience from an unforgettable industry visit to Subisu Cablenet Ltd. On March 25, 2025, my classmates and I had the incredible opportunity to step out of the classroom and into the heart of Nepal’s tech industry with a visit to Subisu Cablenet Ltd., a leading Internet Protocol (IP)-based service provider. This visit not only deepened my understanding of the cyber security world but also gave me valuable insights into the intersection of theory and practice in a leading technology company. The day was filled with learning, exploration, and professional wisdom that will surely resonate throughout my career.

A Journey into the Heart of Nepal's Internet Industry

The day began at 11:00 AM as we arrived at the Subisu office, where we were immediately immersed in an atmosphere of innovation and professionalism. We gathered in the Subisu Learning & Development Center, a space that exuded the company’s forward-thinking culture. Our hosts, Mr. Ram Chandra Thapa, the HR Manager, and Mr. Rupesh Kumar Thapa, the L3 Research & Development Team Manager, warmly welcomed us and they took us on a journey through Subisu’s story how it grew from a local player to a cornerstone of Nepal’s internet landscape. What stood out to me was their passion for innovation, something I’m starting to appreciate more as I explore cyber security. They also broke down the technical side of things, explaining how the internet works behind the scenes and what keeps a data center ticking concepts I’ve only scratched the surface of in my coursework.

The Data Center Tour: Witnessing Cyber Security in Action

At 11:55 AM, we moved to one of the most anticipated parts of the visit the Subisu Data Center. This is where the magic happens, where terabytes of data are securely stored, processed, and managed. As a student of cyber security, I’ve read about data centers in textbooks, but nothing compares to seeing one in action. Mr. Rupesh Kumar Thapa led us on an exclusive tour of this highly secure facility, explaining the architecture, security protocols, and operational intricacies that keep Subisu’s network running smoothly.

We saw firsthand how the company ensures the integrity and security of its data systems integral knowledge for anyone interested in pursuing a career in cyber security. From advanced firewalls to disaster recovery strategies, it was fascinating to see how all these components work in tandem to provide an impenetrable digital infrastructure.
As someone still learning the ropes of cyber forensics, seeing how data is stored and protected in real-time made me realize just how critical our field is to keeping the digital world secure. It wasn’t just a tour it was a chance to connect the dots between my lectures and the systems I might one day help safeguard.

Customer Service Insights: The Human Element in Technology

Following the data center tour, we made our way to the Subisu Call Center at 12:45 PM. While customer service may not immediately come to mind when we think about cyber security, the importance of communication, troubleshooting, and resolving technical issues became evident as we toured the facility. Mr. Ram Krishna, who led us through the call center, explained how Subisu handles a wide range of customer concerns, from basic connectivity issues to more complex technical challenges.
It was clear that efficient customer service is an essential pillar of Subisu’s success. In the realm of cyber security, understanding customer concerns and addressing them swiftly is critical. This visit reminded me that being technically proficient is important, but being able to communicate effectively and provide solutions in high-pressure situations is equally vital in the tech world.

Professional Wisdom: Insights Beyond the Classroom
As we wrapped up the tour, we gathered outside under the shade of a tree for some informal but incredibly valuable advice from Mr. Ram Krishna. He shared insights that went far beyond technical knowledge, emphasizing the importance of soft skills such as leadership, teamwork, and communication. These skills, he explained, are key to thriving in a professional environment, especially in dynamic industries like cyber security.

He also encouraged us to stay passionate, remain curious, and continuously seek out opportunities for growth. His words resonated with me, reminding me that technical skills are important, but it’s the ability to collaborate, lead, and communicate effectively that truly sets professionals apart in today’s fast-paced digital landscape.

A Day To Remember

Looking back, this visit was more than just a field trip, it was a glimpse into the industry I’m training to join. I left with a better grasp of how cyber security and forensics play out in real life, from protecting data centers to solving customer issues. Plus, it was inspiring to see Nepali professionals leading the charge in this space. We wrapped up the day back at college with a meal courtesy of Westminster College, a nice touch after hours of learning and exploring.

I can’t thank The Westminster College enough for making this happen. It’s one thing to study cyber threats and digital evidence in class but seeing it all in action is a game-changer. To Subisu Cablenet Ltd., thank you for opening your doors and sharing your expertise with us. Your hospitality and insights have fueled my excitement for this field even more.

As I head into the rest of my second year, I’m already looking forward to more experiences like this one that bridge the gap between textbooks and the real world.  If you’re curious about cyber security or forensics, trust me there’s so much to discover out there!
